How to read these figures.
Affiliation, practice, and spiritual-belief figures come from Pew Research Center’s 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study and its 2026 National Public Opinion Reference Survey. The landscape study surveyed more than 35,000 adults across all 50 states. The congregation figure comes from the 2020 U.S. Religion Census, which reports congregation and adherent counts from participating religious bodies.
These sources measure different things and use different methods. Affiliation figures describe how adults identify, and different surveys can produce slightly different estimates. Practice figures describe reported behavior. Spiritual-belief figures describe what adults say they believe. Congregation and adherent counts are not a direct count of all religious Americans, and the census notes that membership totals were estimated for some groups.
