How to read these figures.
The affiliation and practice statistics come from Pew Research Center’s 2023-24 Religious Landscape Study, published in 2025. Pew surveyed more than 35,000 adults across all 50 states. The congregation figure comes from the 2020 U.S. Religion Census, which reports congregation and adherent counts from participating religious bodies.
These sources measure different things and use different methods. Affiliation figures describe how adults identify. Practice figures describe reported behavior. Congregation and adherent counts are not a direct count of all religious Americans, and the census notes that membership totals were estimated for some groups.
